Dr. Barnwell grew up in Florida and attended MIT, where he earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in 1965, 1967, and 1970 respectively. At MIT, he developed the first speech synthesis-by-rule system for the MIT reading machine.

Dr. Barnwell came to Georgia Tech in 1971 and retired in 2006. During his 35 years at Georgia Tech, Dr. Barnwell played a major role in establishing ECE's Digital Signal Processing Group as one of the finest in the world. An internationally recognized leader in speech coding and digital signal processing, he authored two books and numerous research papers, and he received numerous awards for research, education, and entrepreneurship.
