The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is pleased to welcome our two newest faculty members, Frank Li and David Frakes, to Georgia Tech.
Li is an assistant professor and is a member of the computer systems and software technical interest group. His office is located in CODA, Room E1078B. Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Li was a Visiting Researcher at Facebook. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley in 2019 and his B.S. degree in electrical engineering and computer science in 2013.
Li leads the BEES Lab. His research interests span network and software security, Internet measurements, and human factors in security, with a particular focus on improving security operations in practice.
While he was a graduate student, Li was supported by the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and the DoD National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, and he received the Berkeley Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award.
Frakes is an associate professor and holds a joint appointment in ECE with the bioengineering and digital signal processing technical interest groups. His primary academic appointment is with the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, and his office is located at Technology Enterprise Park, Room 214. Frakes is a four-time Georgia Tech alumnus, receiving his B.S. degree in electrical engineering, M.S. degree in mechanical engineering, M.S. degree in electrical engineering, and Ph.D. in bioengineering. He was also a six-time letterman at Georgia Tech in football and track and field.
Frakes leads the Applied Vision Lab at Georgia Tech. His research interests are in computer vision, medical devices, and fluid dynamics.
Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Frakes worked with Apple, where he served as lead of camera software for the iPhone 11 family of products. He also worked with Google, where he led research behind Lens, Google’s visual search engine. Frakes was previously on the faculty of Arizona State University, where he received the NSF CAREER Award and the World Technology Network Award in Health and Medicine. Frakes also received the 2013 Innovator of the Year Award from the state of Arizona for his contributions to 3D printing-based planning for congenital heart defect repair.
“Please check out the faculty profiles for Frank and David on the ECE website and send them an email greeting or introduce yourselves as you see them in online meetings or in person on campus,” said Magnus Egerstedt, the Steve W. Chaddick School Chair and ECE Professor. “I am excited to have both of them here at Georgia Tech and look forward to them having long and productive careers with us!”
