The associate professor won the award for the second time in five years, this time for his work on thermal monitoring in 3D chips.
Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Associate Professor Visvesh Sathe received the 2025 Intel Outstanding Researcher Award for his work on thermal monitoring in three-dimensional (3D) chips.
It was his second time winning the award, having previously received it in 2020.
The award spotlights exceptional work from Intel-sponsored university research, advancing Intel’s mission to create world-changing technology that enriches the lives of every person on Earth.
Sathe was recognized for his work, “Runtime Thermal Management in Scaled 3D SoC Technologies – Circuits, Techniques and Architectures.”
The research developed compact digital temperature sensors powered directly off a chip’s main power supply (Vdd), featuring high precision, minimal noise interference, and simplified single-point calibration. Through validation across multiple test chips and firmware implementations, these sensors provide process-scalable, detailed thermal monitoring that ensures reliable and energy-efficient performance in cutting-edge semiconductor technologies.
The work is crucial as effective thermal management in advanced 3D system-on-chip designs demands precise, low-overhead sensing solutions.
He was one of 10 researchers included in the latest class of winners.
Sathe joined ECE in 2022 after stints as an associate professor at the University of Washington and a technical staff member in the Low-Power Advanced Development Group at AMD.
He currently oversees the Processing Systems Lab (PSyLab), which conducts research on a broad range of problems in energy-efficient computing and implantable electronics.
His group’s current research spans clocking, voltage-regulation, power management, baseband processing, ultra-low power electronics, thermal sensing and management, and closed-loop bi-directional neural interfaces.
Sathe also won an NSF Career award in 2019 and serves on the technical program committee of the IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits Conference, the Design Automation Conference, and the SSCS Webinar.
This is the third consecutive year an ECE faculty member has won the award, with Professors Shimeng Yu and Azad Naeemi winning in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
