Justin Romberg, an assistant professor in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been chosen for the Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni Award, which is given by the Rice Engineering Alumni Association.

This award is given to the outstanding engineering
alumnus from Rice University who is 40 years old or less and recognizes the exemplary achievements of that person. Dr. Romberg will receive this award on October 14 during the Rice Engineering Alumni Annual Open Meeting during Homecoming weekend.

A faculty member in ECE since 2006, Dr. Romberg holds three engineering degrees from Rice: his B.S.E.E. in 1997, Master's in 1999, and Ph.D. in 2003. His research focus is on the role that mathematical signal structure plays in making difficult processing tasks much easier. Recently, he has studied how sparse representations can make signal acquisition smarter and more flexible.

In the last two years, Dr. Romberg has received an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, and a Packard Fellowship. "All of these honors recognize Justin's impact in the technical details of research, as well as his reputation for leadership in research and education, and bring great distinction to himself, ECE, and Georgia Tech," said Gary May, professor and Steve W. Chaddick School Chair of ECE. "I am thrilled that Justin has been chosen for this special honor from his alma mater and am proud that he is our colleague."
