Within the last year, Vijay Madisetti and Arshdeep Bahga have published two textbooks – The Internet of Things: A Hands-On Approach and Cloud Computing: A Hands-On Approach. Both are affiliated with the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where Madisetti is a professor and Bahga is a research scientist.
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to physical and virtual objects that have unique identities and are connected to the Internet to facilitate intelligent applications that make energy, logistics, industrial control, retail agriculture, and many other domains “smarter.” IoT is rapidly gaining momentum driven by the advancements in sensor networks, mobile devices, wireless communications, networking, and cloud technologies. Published in September 2014, The Internet of Things: A Hands-On Approach is written as a textbook for colleges and universities and also for IoT vendors and service providers who may be interested in offering a broader perspective of IoT to accompany their own customer and developer training programs.
Released in December 2013, Cloud Computing: A Hands-On Approach is written as a textbook on cloud computing for educational programs at colleges and universities, and also for cloud service providers who may be interested in offering a broader perspective of cloud computing to accompany their own customer and developer training programs. The book covers the basic technologies that form the foundations of cloud computing, the programming aspects of cloud computing with a view toward rapid prototyping complex applications, and specialized aspects of cloud computing such as cloud application benchmarking, multimedia cloud applications, cloud security, and big data analytics. To date, almost 20 universities have adopted or are evaluating the book, and an Asian edition was recently released.
