Georgia Tech educators and researchers at the 4 American Society for Engineering Education.

Over 60 Georgia Tech educators and researchers shared their work at the 2024 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Conference in Portland, Ore., this June.

Among them were many faculty members from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), including Matthieu Bloch, Timothy Brothers, Jennifer Hasler, Lakshmi Raju, Jacqueline Rohde, Mary Ann Weitnauer, and Ying Zhang

Julia Sonnenberg-Klein played a key role in organizing Georgia Tech’s presence at the conference, representing the Institute at the Vertically Integrated Projects Program booth.

“ASEE is unique in that it serves researchers and practitioners, from faculty working to improve education in their departments to researchers specializing in pedagogy, identity, and education policy,” Sonnenberg-Klein said. “We had attendees from so many departments and so many levels, undergrads, grads, faculty, post-docs. We even had an OMSC student who was presenting work he’d done at his previous institution.” 

The presentations encompassed a diverse array of disciplines, addressing both technical and professional subjects, such as makerspaces and student wellness.

Georgia Tech faculty headlined the “Adopting and Assessing Story-driven Learning Approaches in Your Courses” session at the conference. School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Kevin Haas, Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering learning scientist Kali Morgan, Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) research scientist Ariana Turner, and BME postdoctoral fellow Hyeyeon Lee spoke at the hands-on workshop.

The team demonstrated key elements of personal storytelling, story-driven learning as a pedagogical method, and how the method can help educators create value for students and develop their entrepreneurial mindset.

In total there were 27 papers/workshops, eight posters, and one booth presented by Georgia Tech faculty, showcasing cutting edge research and the Institute’s commitment to education.

ASEE is one of the leading organizations in engineering education. The Annual Conference is the single largest yearly gathering of ASEE members, where they exchange ideas and experiences of working in engineering education.
