The ECE Ph.D. student received the prestigious IEEE Power and Energy Society Murty & Bhavani Yalla Power System Protection & Control Fellowship, supporting his efforts to develop more reliable, resilient, and sustainable electric power systems.

Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Ph.D. student Yuan Nie received the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Murty & Bhavani Yalla Power System Protection & Control Fellowship.

Established in 2025, the fellowship is awarded annually to one student who is pursuing a career in the power and energy sector with an emphasis in power system protection and control.

As a member of Professor Maryam Saeedifard's research group, Nie studies protection and control of high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems, power electronics, and large-signal analysis of power systems with high penetrations of renewable generation.

He has six years of research experience in the power system protection and control field and has published several journal and conference papers in this field.

“I am especially grateful to my advisor, Professor Saeedifard, for her invaluable guidance and continued support of my research, as well as to the Georgia Tech School of ECE for providing such a supportive and inspiring research environment,” he said. “This recognition encourages me to continue advancing research in power system protection and control and to contribute to the development of a more reliable and sustainable electric power grid.”

Nie is in the third year of his Ph.D. studies in ECE. He is an active member of PES at Georgia Tech, serving as vice chair of the student chapter, where he supports event planning and chapter operations.
