Empowering ECE Students with Specialized Paths

The Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering has adopted a threaded model for both the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Threads involve the grouping of required and elective courses along specified topics and paths relevant to the electrical and/or computer engineers of the future. Each student will choose two threads within their degree to satisfy requirements for their Bachelor of Science. Degree requirements and degree planning information are available for both Bachelor of Science degrees at the links below.

Explore the Threads

Bioengineering Thread

This thread explores the intersection between electrical and computer engineering (ECE) and health/biosciences to equip you with what you need to succeed in a bioengineering career.

Circuit Technology

This thread provides the detailed understanding of design and circuit operation applicable to a wide range of applications.

Computing Hardware & Emerging Architectures

This thread explores new computing technologies inspired by biology and quantum physics such as neuromorphic and quantum computing.

Cybersecurity

The ECE Cybersecurity thread teaches the fundamentals of secure system design and cyber defense.

Devices

This thread is concerned with embedded computational artifacts that interact with people or the physical world.

Distributed Systems

This thread explores how software systems are created to do this—from controlling small scale embedded microarchitectures to large-scale data centers, and from tracking personal fitness to coordinating distributed technology in smart cities.

Electronic Devices

This thread prepares you for a career designing and manufacturing nano-scale devices that for example, are used in complex circuitry to perform some desired function such as computation, sensing, control, communications, and amplification, among countless other functions.

Electric Energy Systems

This thread explores power systems and markets, smart grids, power electronics, electric machines, dielectric materials, end use technologies, and secure protection and control approaches to creatively contribute to the transformation of the electric energy sector and enable career paths in the areas outlined below.

Information Internetworks

This thread deals with implications in the context of personal and organizational information management.

Robotics

This thread prepares students to apply this basic concept in diverse areas—such as space, air and ground vehicles, and robots of various types—to safely automate tasks, or work in hazardous and hostile environments, without human input.

Sensing & Exploration

This thread explores the intellectual challenges that underlie this critical engineering need.

Signal & Information Processing

This thread explores how signal and information processing is behind every aspect of our digital lives.

Systems & Architecture

This thread teaches you about the organization of computer systems, how they are built using different hardware and software layers and how they are programmed

Telecommunications

This thread focuses on the communication engineering principles and technologies that form the backbone of the information age, from data storage to data transmission, from wireless to optics.
