Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering undergraduate student Shreya Iyer was one of two students to be selected as recipients of the highly competitive ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship, which supports undergraduate and graduate students conducting research at leading institutions across Switzerland. She will pursue machine learning and sustainable robotics research with the award.
Shreya Iyer
Shreya Iyer, a Stamps President’s Scholar studying electrical engineering, will use her ThinkSwiss award to join the Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics, a collaborative research effort between the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), and Imperial College London.
Under the supervision of Professor Mirko Kovač and postdoctoral researcher Luca Romanello, Iyer’s research focuses on developing embodied intelligence for biohybrid, multimodal robotic systems. These systems are designed to address pressing global challenges, including invasive species mitigation and strengthening environmental resilience.
Her work combines electrical engineering, robotics, materials science, and environmental systems thinking, reflecting a growing interdisciplinary approach to sustainability challenges. By integrating biological principles with robotic design, Iyer’s research aims to create adaptable systems capable of operating effectively in complex, real-world environments. The collaborative, international nature of the lab offers her a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of engineering innovation and environmental stewardship.
