Tom Brewer, longtime instructional laboratory manager in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has passed away.
From 1981 until his retirement in 2018, Tom played a central role in shaping the hands-on learning experience for generations of students. Known for his technical expertise, dry wit, and signature “Brewerisms,” he brought both structure and humor to the lab environment. His influence extended beyond ECE, reaching students from across Georgia Tech who passed through the School’s instructional labs.
Over the course of nearly four decades, Tom worked with five successive school chairs and helped build a laboratory program that became a cornerstone of the ECE curriculum. His legacy is reflected in the students he mentored, the colleagues he supported, and the culture of excellence he helped foster.
Tom’s brother-in-law, Ralph Whitfield, has been in contact with the School and shared the following arrangements. Tom wrote his own obituary years ago, and the family is honoring his wish to have it published. It can be read here.

Tom formed lasting connections with students, faculty, and staff throughout his time at Georgia Tech. As the community reflects on his life and legacy, this moment also serves as a reminder to care for one another and to take time for personal well-being. The strength of a community lies in the support it offers, especially in times of loss.
