Vijaykrishnan Narayanan received his B.E.(Bachelor of Engineering) in Computer Science and Engineering from University of Madras in 1993, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of South Florida in 1998, respectively. Vijaykrishnan Narayanan joined the faculty of the Pennsylvania State University as an assistant professor in 1998, where he served for 28 years. He is now an Emeritus Evan Pugh University Professor and Atherton Professor at The Pennsylvania State University. In August 2026, he serves as Jae S. Lin Endowed Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech.
His technical areas of interest include Computer Architecture, System Design Using Emerging Technologies and Embedded Intelligent Systems. His research has made sustained contributions to the field of power-aware computing and smart vision systems including open-source simulation tools, patents and technology transition to industry and government. He has an extensive network of collaborators and has participated in several interdisciplinary programs over the last 25 years in areas of semiconductor devices, material science, entomology, neuroscience and nuclear engineering. He has mentored over 140 graduate students and published over 700 peer reviewed publications with a H-index of 87. His works have earned several best paper and most influential papers. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, ACM, AAAS and National Academy of inventors.
Narayanan has served in multiple leadership roles including the US-India Defense INDUS-X and Semiconductor Initiatives, IEEE and ACM professional society leadership and in administrative roles at Penn State managing the limited submissions process for the entire university system and as Associate Dean for Innovation in College of Engineering. Narayanan also served as founding co-editor in Chief of ACM Journal of Emerging Technologies in Computer Systems, editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on CAD and serves as Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Micro.

Dr. Narayanan's research focuses on power-aware computer systems. Excessive power consumption is a key limiter to the design of modern computer systems ranging from large data centers to tiny and pervasive embedded internet of things. His research has addressed the power challenges in several intersecting domains such as the design of power-efficient computing systems, the design of application specific processors, the design of multicore architectures using emerging technologies like 3D stacking and nanotechnology, and the development of methodologies to understand interplay between performance, power and reliability.
Dr. Narayanan’s research has involved extensive interdisciplinary and multi-institutional collaborations. He works on developing intelligent vision systems that assist humans in civilian, defense and commercial applications. In the DARPA Neovision program, his team demonstrated brain-inspired vision systems that reduced power consumption of contemporary state-of-the-art by two orders of magnitude. Students trained in this project, currently lead commercial AI system design in Google, IBM, Intel and Meta. The commercial and societal impact of embedded vision systems for commercial (shopper insights), defense (autonomous weapons) and societal impact (assistive technologies) developed by Narayanan are cited in his election as Fellow of National Academy of Inventors. His work on an NSF expeditions-in-computing project resulted in simultaneous advances in computer vision, hardware, human-machine interface and neuroscience to enable a new generation of assistive vision technologies that enable independent shopping for persons with visual impairments. His team continues to work on developing assistive wearable vision systems supported by a NIH and an NSF project. His team is also working with entomologists in building sensor systems to track biodiversity in a NSF NRT project.
Narayanan’s current work involves partnership with leading semiconductor companies (Intel, IBM. Global Foundries, Samsung and Micron) towards replacing the 50 year von Neumann computing paradigm that treats memory and processing distinct through novel processing-in-memory systems (JUMP 2.0 PRISM center). He is also collaborating with material scientists in the DoE 3DFeM center in developing Ferroelectric Memories.
Efficient memory technologies are critical to reduce energy needs of emerging machine learning systems.
I teach courses related to Computer Architecture, Digital Design and Embedded Systems. I have taught and co-taught courses ranging from first year undergraduate seminars to advanced graduate courses ranging in size from a few students to large 350 student classes. I also train graduate students, undergraduate students, high school students and teachers in research topics.
